A Road trip

It was 1st of October 2009 Thursday, an odd day if considered in the IT life, because most of the event which happens in software professional’s life fall between Friday and Sunday. But as the next day i.e. 2nd October 2009 was a holiday and we were getting a long weekend of 3 days I just came up with an idea of having a day out program on the 2nd just like a road trip. I proposed this plan to my society friends in the morning and by noon everyone agreed on this. It took noon to get the response as some of them get up at 12 and instead of wishing them good morning we have to wish them good afternoon. Then at night we gathered over a coffee and decided where all we can go. As per the plan we agreed on going to Lohgad, Karle & Bhaje caves and if possible visiting some of the spots near Lonavala.

We were a group of 5 friends. Myself (Bhushan), Akshay, Saaket, Tushar and Sameer. One of our friends Sagar couldn’t make his visit to this trip as he was busy with the presentations which he had to present in his college. We had decided that we would be leaving our society at 6:30am so that we could get some more time to spend together as we had to return by dinner time and had decided to take dinner at our own home. But as always there has to be something or the other in between a perfect plan. As Sameer was going to come to Pune on the 2nd from Aurangabad, his bus got late and he reached his house by 6. Then after that we gathered down at around 7:30 and finally left the society premises at 8am. We had got our bikes washed and cleaned, I even got it wax polished. Then we got our tanks full and hit the road. It was the old Pune - Mumbai highway by which we had to travel and reach Lohgad. In between we took a halt at Akurdi and had our breakfast at some spot which Akshay knew as he had his college nearby. The spot was nice and the Chaha – Pohe served there were nice too. On having this dish Sameer said “Mulgi pasant ahe”, because according to the tradition of arrange marriage whenever we go to see a girl they offer us Chaha – Pohe and if we like all the items (including the girl) we say in Marathi “Mulgi pasant ahe”.

After having some good stuff we again were ready to hit the road. The road was too awesome. We were not coming below a speed of 80 on that road. I was driving my Pulsar, Saaket had his Glamour and Tushar was driving his XCD. Now everyone thought that they would show off by accelerating their bikes and crossing the speed limits which they normally won’t cross. Hence we had some sort of a short race on that awesome road and it’s not required to mention who the champion was, as it was me (Pulsar). We were double seat and had reached 100 on full throttle. Actually we could have gone farther than that but it was of no need as 100 was sufficient for the other bikes to show who was Definitely Male. As we were heading towards Lonavala we thought that all of us should have our PUC and as I was not having mine we entered a petrol pump and got our PUC. He just took out a card and wrote our bike number on it with some readings on his own. He didn’t even check my bike for the pollution level. Seeing this I also got the PUC done for my mother’s PEP, father’s splendor and Akshay too got the PUC for his Kinetic, even though we didn’t had the bikes there. We just gave him the bike number and he gave us the PUC done. After stuffing those PUC cards in our pocket we got on the road and reached Malavali from where he had to go to Lohgad.

On reaching the foot of Lohgad we could see some of the groups playing under waterfall and at that moment we hoped we too could have got some extra clothes and enjoyed the fresh water falls. Then we parked our bikes and started the trek for Lohgad. It was an awesome place to visit. After that we went to Bhaje caves which was very near Lohgad. These caves too were good and we clicked some photos with some unique poses. There was a small waterfall near the Bhaje caves where we went and where Tushar had a nice fall on the green rocks (sluggish rocks). His entire jeans got stuffed with that stuff and he got his pant washed in the same waterfall. Climbing the caves and the fort was fun. Those of us who go weekly to climb Parvati could feel the difference here. We were climbing nonstop while the others were just not able to catch up their breath while climbing. They always required to get a halt and drink water.

After finishing these two spots we went to Lonavala and had our lunch there. The hotel in which we entered was nice too. We had taken south Indian food and Misal along with it. How can one forget to buy Chikki after visiting Lonavala? Actually Lonavala is a bit extra famous for the Chikki. Among 10 shops on the road 6 would be the chikki shops, 2 would be hotels and the rest 2 would be some other shops. Thus we entered A1 chikki shop and got some nice chikki from there. Just to describe you we got Groundnut crush, Elaichi crush and dry fruit chikki. We ate some over there and got the rest packed for family. It was almost 3 pm and hence we decided that we would directly go to Bhushi dam. On the way to Bhushi dam we also saw Lonavala dam. The dam was huge but as it was not having much water it was not looking much huge. Then we reached Bhushi dam and got our bikes parked for some nominal charge and started going towards the Dam wall. Initially we were allowed to go over the dam wall but now they had closed down the path due to some of the incidents which had happened over the past. Now we could only see the water and enjoy the water flowing from far distance. There too we took some photos and rested for some time as this was the last spot which we could have finished for that day. After enjoying the nature we finally came back to our bikes and prepared ourselves for our return journey.

While returning we decided that we would go home by the Pune – Mumbai bypass road, i.e. the one which goes from Hinjewadi. This is the actual route which the buses going for Mumbai take and halt at Hinjewadi. Again as the road was clean and clear again we accelerated till a speed of 100 km/ hr and stopped for coffee at some place near Pimpri. At that time we finished off all the eatables which we had taken along with us including biscuits, cakes, and chocolates and after refreshing ourselves with a nice cup of coffee and biscuits we then ultimately reached our society at around 7 pm. The road trip was a nice trip with a distance of 175 km. thus I had driven 175 km in one day, 7am to 7pm and also enjoyed all the spots which we visited in between. On reaching home we had a nice bath with warm water and after dinner again got together to view the photos at Saaket’s house. After transferring the photos I came home and just entered my bed and gave all spare parts of my body which were misplaced especially the parts of back some rest and had a nice sleep.

Mangalore trip

What would you feel if you have been planning to go somewhere since 1 year and finally you make it? You know that you have taken a lot of efforts to make this plan workout and have been praying to the god for success. The same was the feeling when we went to Mangalore on a trip and also to meet our college friends who have got posted to Mangalore from the company.

The planning of this Mangalore trip was going on since January 2009 over mails, calls, meetings but due to some or the other reasons it was getting postponed. Now finally after a long discussion on this topic somehow 4 members decided to go to Mangalore and they were Bhushan, Ninad, Pavan and Aniruddha. As much as we were interested in going over there, the manglorians i.e. Ashish, Vishal and Aviraj too were excited to meet us. They had booked the tickets for us online and also got some discounts over the trip. Some other members of our group were unable to make their visit for this trip due to various reasons. Abhishek had his GRE exam, Aniket had to go to Delhi with his parents, Pramod was stupid to ask his Manager for leave and hence couldn’t get it, Mahesh had some unwanted exam for which he had not studied for even an hour and yet wanted to give that exam.

After the tickets were booked we all were totally enthusiastic, and all the time we were getting those feeling of going to Mangalore and meeting our friends and enjoying. Finally the day arrived when we had to leave by the KSRTC Volvo (Airavath) from Swargate. After boarding the bus we made ourselves comfortable with the seating arrangement by adjusting the inclination and wrapped the blankets around us. The blankets were necessary as the bus was complete AC with a temperature of 25 degrees maintained. The first movie which was played was the SpiderMan3. The bus took a halt at the Natraj hotel near Shivapur and we had our dinner there. To get a feel of south India (the place where we were going) we ate Dosa, idli sambar as our dinner. Then, after taking some snacks with us for our journey we got to sleep. Actually it was Aniruddha (Ghante) who got to sleep. In our trip of around 96 hours, Ghante might have slept for almost 60 hours. He was the one who didn’t require any reason to sleep. He used to sleep anywhere and at anytime. And on the contrary it was Pavan (PD) who didn’t sleep at all while reaching Mangalore in the bus. According to him he doesn’t feel sleepy when something is moving around him. We three used to sleep for sometime and then would get up; every time we got up we saw PD doing something or the other with his mobile.

The journey was going very nice and smooth and suddenly something hard struck our bus and we heard someone shouting. Actually it was our bus who had hit a truck. The driver had dashed against a truck while overtaking that truck, damaging the door and the left part of the glass instantly. As this was an accident, they took the bus to the police station and we waited there for almost 2 hours for the next bus to arrive. In the meantime Ninad, according to his habit, gave some poses and took photographs of him and also the broken glass. We were standing in the jungle side road at around 4 am and waiting for the next Volvo. Then the Hydrabad-Manglore bus arrived and we boarded into it. Inside the bus the movie Yarana was being played and we enjoyed the movie. It was the NH17 by which we were traveling. Up to some point it was very nice and smooth, but suddenly it turned out to be the one going through villages and having almost 1metre deep potholes. As the bus was having full air suspension whenever the bus went through these potholes inside the bus it would be like we are playing see-saw. Bumping our heads once to the left and then to the right. The condition of the road was the same till we reached Mangalore. Our every part was dislocated, but once we reached Mangalore and met our friends, everyone forgot all the pains and hugged each other. The manglorians had become so fat and gained so much fat especially around their neck, that they were unrecognizable from far distance. There was no need to book a hotel as we stayed in the flat of our friends. It was a big house (2 bhk) with a single restroom (toilet cum bathroom). The restroom had the basin, the toilet, the bathroom all combined into one. Hence at a time only one person can either go for toilet or he can go for a bath. If anyone is inside then the others were not even allowed to brush there teeth, as the basin too was inside. As half of the day had past in travel we just decided to roam about Mangalore on the first day. Then we went to Gajali (Sea food special) where everyone especially Ninad liked all the varieties of Fish which we had taken there. No need to mention Ghante who on hearing the name of Fish goes crazy like anything. After having our lunch we went to Cherry Square for eating deserts and had some mouth watering Ice-cream. This place was near the MG road which was very similar to the MG road of Pune, with some sophisticated people and well dressed girls(very opposite to those typical south Indian girls) we went into a mall named Bharath mall and tried some of the garments to kill the time. After that the plan was to visit some of the famous temples in Mangalore and we did so. The temples over there were beautifully designed and sculpted. Especially the ones with golden plating on them named Kadri temple. The temples and the music played within it were so beautiful that we were enthralled by the feeling on being in such a religious place. After visiting these places the plan was of a party, and hence we ordered pizza and danced on some of the new movie songs.

The second day we had to go to Kerala by train, and also go on the boat house to enjoy the scenic beauty of back waters. But as you all know, getting up early in the morning is like going on a war. And even more difficult is to take all of them along with you for the war. In short for all to get ready early is impossible. The same happened with us and we left our room at 11 am, after that we had our breakfast and then went to Kasargod by bus. From Kasargod we took another bus to Kannur and got down at Nileshwar. As soon as we got down I came to know that we had forgot the bag(containing Ninad's digital camera of 12k and my spectacles 1k and the bag price 0.5k) inside the bus. As soon as I came to know this we all ran behind the bus, but as all the drivers of South are N.Kartikeyn we couldn’t follow him. All of us got tensed and we were looking out for any contact number which we could get. From the ticket number we called the mobile number mentioned on that ticket. After calling that number the customer care gave us a number on the plate as RRC300 (we will not forget this number in our lifetime). She said it’s of no use following the bus but you can track down the same bus at Nileshwar on its return journey from Kannur to Kasargod. This incident happened at around 3 pm and according to our calculations the same bus would be coming at this station on its return journey at around 6:30 pm.

In the meantime we went to the boat house and enjoyed the back waters there. Initially we all were tensed and it was getting reflected on everyones face and hence no one was in the mood for enjoyment. But we all hoped that we would certainly get the bag if we track the bus and hence went into the boat hoping the same. As the boat started getting far from the coast all started gaving some poses and took photos. Actually we all were very hungry at that time, and requested the boat owner to provide something to eat. On this request he provided us with Tea and Parle-G which we ate till the packet was clear. On the boat life jackets were also provided, if anyone wanted to dive into the river and enjoy more. But no one from our side did so, as we had not got spare clothes. This ride continued for around 1 hour and then we came back to have some snacks. As we had not taken the lunch that day, we ate pretty much in the snacks.

Again at around 6 pm we came back to the bus stand and started our hunt for the bag. Whenever we use to see any similar kind of bus we use to get into it and check the shelf for our bag. We had made a plan for this. 2 members were standing besides the main gate. 2 were standing inside the station and 2 went to the next station where the bus would be going. With proper communication between all and praying our gods, finally our prayers got answered and we got the bag without any scratch, without any item missing from it. That day went with complete adventure and as soon as we reached home we had our dinner and went to sleep.
The third day was the day to visit the beaches near Mangalore and play football. On that day we had decided not to waste the day and hence we just got up early and went to the beach without having a bath. To reach the beach we had to cross the back waters by a small boat and then enter the beach. At a distance of about 1 km from the beach, the sea was roaring and now you can imagine how the water at the beach must be like. When we reached there we just were able to enjoy the beauty of the beach. It was very dangerous to enter the beach as the water level had increased a lot and the water pressure was much high for anyone to easily get drowned into the sea. We took some photos and as it started raining we came back from there and had our bath. Then we packed our bags and went for lunch. That day we had decided to eat Sizzlers and hence we went to Sizzler Ranch. A funny incident happened over there. We all were deciding what to order and were asking the captain (typical south Indian) what should we take in English. While talking with each other, someone said”are te nako gheus, tyat mushroom aste”. On hearing this the captain who was a south Indian said “te without mushroom pan gheta yeil”. After hearing these words from him we were shocked. He was actually speaking in Marathi and that too very fluently. After ordering the sizzlers and some soft drinks we just talked about some old memories of our college and by the time the order was served. Almost everyone ate those hot sizzlers along with the cold drinks and enjoyed the dish.

We had our lunch and went to Mangalore bus stand to catch our return trip bus. After seeing off our friends we got into the bus and enjoyed our first movie 8x10 Tasveer. Actually we enjoyed it in our dreams. Almost everyone (even Pavan) slept on the return journey. We had our dinner at Kamat hotel somewhere at around 11 pm and then I don’t remember anything until it was sunset and we had reached Natraj hotel again (near Shivapur). We had our tea and then reached Swargate from where we took Tum Tum and went our respective house. Even after reaching home we were having a feeling as if we were traveling and all those fun days were getting into our memories. This trip was a success and now we are hoping to arrange for many such trips as and when we get time and all the people are present to make it a success.

My way of Gymming

Everybody has a dream that he should have a muscular body and feel attractive. For this one does need to take a lot of efforts, be it in diet or in exercise. Some of you might be just very skinny, while some of you might be hoping to be like that. But it is not always the way how we feel it should be. The ones who are thin feel to get muscular and the ones which contradict them hope to burn more calories and develop a good physique. I have seen most of the people who exercise tremendously and yet they don’t get their muscles bulge out and also seen some of them who workout a little and can develop a great body. I would say that just by exercising your body till you exhaust will not make you muscular. There should be a perfect balance between exercise and diet.

Dieting here doesn’t mean eating less. It means eating the proper things at proper time. You can get the tips on this from net and hence I would not be writing about this here. I would be writing here about the way I do my exercise at home (if I am not going to the gym). When I was undergoing my engineering I would get loads of time for everything and hence had joint a gym and would do my exercise there. At some point after joining the gym I had developed a 4 pack abs with the 5th and the 6th on their way to appear. But then I had to stop my gym as I had to go to Mysore for my company training. From since that moment I never saw the packs of my abs on my stomach. It is only after a great amount of contraction of your stomach muscles that I was able to see them. Since then I developed this way of working out at home itself. I took this decision as I was knew that later I wouldn’t be getting time to make my dream come true about looking at least 10% similar to any of the body builder (Arnold / Hrithik).

As a software engineer you are always struggling for time for exercise. You can’t rely on the evening as you may never know if you have to wait for long in office for that day. Hence the best time for exercise is in the morning by getting up early i.e. at 5 am. Then you can think of doing your exercise. Hence I get up at 5 and start with a bit of warm-up and jogging on the spot. Also a few jumps would make your blood flow through your body which has been stiffened as you have slept for at least 6 hours (IT professionals get only this much amount of sleep). Following this I do SuryaNamaskar (even if the sun has not risen yet). Elder people say that 15-20 SuryaNamaskar a day are more than enough as your daily exercise. It will also help you develop the variety of abs packs (i.e. 2 packs, 4 packs, 6 packs) my personal experience is also the same and I completely agree to this point. Each and every group of muscles gets strengthened by this exercise and a bit of stretching is also done. I myself cannot extend above 10 per day. You can perform 1 SuryaNamaskar in 1 minute and hence for doing 10 you would require just 10 minutes from your so called busy schedule. Hence I feel that everyone can surely take out 10 minutes for exercise. Instead of chitchatting on the coffee table for 20 minutes you can save that time and use for exercise.

After I have done my warm-up I do 2 sets of pushups, dips (normal ones and bench dips too, for triceps) and sit-ups. If you just have 30 minutes for your exercise before you can catch your daily office bus, then this is the perfect set of exercise for you. Whenever I get up late i.e. at around 6 I stop at this point of my exercise. If you do this much for 1 month without any breaks then you too will feel the difference.

Then comes the actual workout part. A good gym charges at around 300rs per month for just weight gain. If you want to have treadmill then you should not worry about the charge, its always too high to think about it. Hence instead of investing this much amount monthly what we have done is done an initial investment of around 1000 and purchased our own equipments. This includes sets of dumbbells, rods, plates, spring (compressible and expandable), pushup bars (not bra’s), with all these equipments we (a group of 4 friends) have setup a small gym which we have kept in one of my friends house. Then while time of exercise we take the equipment to the terrace and do the workout there. By reading you might feel that these are a lot of equipments, but actually they are just enough to start off. As you continue for more than a month you feel that the weight of the instruments should be increased. But right now we don’t have that much money to invest in it. And as there is only a single rod then we always have to keep on adding and removing weights in order to have a proper workout. This takes a lot of time. If you desire to have a proper workout you should have a bench (not the IT company bench). Most of the exercise patterns are based on bench. However the cost of the bench is too high and hence we take the support of the divider between two terraces. This divider is just 1 foot high and hence has perfectly served our purpose of the bench.

We don’t have a separate room for keeping all the equipments and exercising there itself. In future we are planning to take a room on lease inside our society itself or else if other people are ready to join this gym we can officially ask the society members to give us a room and the others people would contribute for the same. This would help setup a gym for our society (our residential complex) and have its own independent gymnasium monitored and owned by us.

My daily routine at my office

I am writing this about my day to day schedule after joining Infosys Technologies Ltd. Pune DC, that is after I completed my training from Mysore and joined production here. Before reading this post you must read the contents which I have mentioned in the document about “Life at Mysore”. Once you get an overview of how the life was at Mysore and when you read this post you will know the exact difference in two lifestyles.

First of all I would give you a small introduction about how I came into this field. I completed my computer engineering and hence had no more good choice than to join an IT company based on my knowledge. Initially the picture of an IT industry was such, that everyone was attracted towards it. Even the non-computer people would love to get posted to an IT company. The basic reasons why the IT industry was famous were Wealthy salary, relaxed job, 5 day working, and 2 day long weekend. There were many such factors which would make the IT Company stand tall in front of most of the other companies. Even girls used to select an IT professional for marriage based on the salary he had. Now the picture has changed completely. I will talk about that later.
I had asked you to read the Mysore post before this post because there is a drastic change in the lifestyle which I had there(mysore) and which I have right now. Starting of I will tell you about my office timings. My office (official) timings are not official as such. They say that your quarterly average working hours should be 9 hours and 15 minutes. Hence you should be present in the company for at least 9 hours a day. The most common working time would be 9 to 6. in order to make the in time flexible you have to come by your own vehicle, but as I stay at a distance of 35 km from the company there is no other option than the office bus. If you try to come by Bike, then after completing the days work and riding the bike for 35 km and going home, you get completely exhausted and are left with nothing to do that to go to sleep directly. Hence I come by the bus which arrives at my stop at 7:30 am and reach office at 8:30 am.
But it is not always that all people come by 9 and leave at 6. As you are new to the office i.e. you are fresher’s you have to be present at 9 in the morning, but your leads would come to office at 10 or even late. This makes an addition of 1 hour in your daily schedule. Now as the lead would come at 10, then he would go for a breakfast and then return at around 11. Addition of 2 hours to your daily schedule. Then he will assign us some work which would be sufficient for the day(actually more than enough for that day). At 12 PM it will be our lunch time and we go to the food court for our lunch. The food which they serve there is not of great quality, but it is good. Good for health (for developing a good belly, like a pot. You can call it as a pot belly).this is the main reason why you see most of the software engineers with big stomachs (similar to a pregnant woman). They use a lot of baking soda while food preparation which makes you feel full early and inserts a large number of fats into your body. Now I feel like getting Tiffin from home is a must in order to maintain the shape of my belly. My abs have almost disappeared, but now I don’t want to create a bulge there. In addition to that the multiple cups of coffee also help in weight gain.

Everytime you take a break for a coffee or to go to the restroom and you return to your desk, one important activity is pending on your side. That is “Checking of mails”. This is the most important activity in every software engineers daily schedule. I get almost 50 mails daily, among which some are of work and rest all are just for timepass. Initially the mailbox size limit of 50 MB was a major concern for me, but now I have configured my outlook to my email address. With the feature of PST(personal folders) you can store all the mails on your local computer and the mail box size would be as large as the size of your hard disk. Right now my mailbox size has gone to 2 GB. All the data which arrives in my inbox I keep it in the archive and it contains variety folders like Photos, videos, written stuff, inspiring mails, good morning mails, careful mails etc. some of the mails cant be viewed when you are in company. Hence I take this pst to my home and then read it on my home PC in peace.

After you have had your lunch you will return to your cubicle and try to start with your work. Certainly you would get some doubt for which a clarification is required. For this doubt to get cleared you approach your lead and by that time he too has left for lunch. The work again goes into pending state.then you would not feel like working. I always feel sleepy after having my lunch, because that’s it what we use to do in PLs(preparation leaves during our engineering). Then in order to get rid of the sleep a cup of coffee is must for it. But it is the time when the actual work has to start, but as we are not in the mood the work goes into pending state. We work for some time and then it is time for snacks. Again we go to the food court and put some junk food in our body. Then after returning the work continues. Now reading this you would have come to know that the work assigned is much more. But the actual work done within provided 9 hours is very less. Hence every time we find that we have to slog for more hours. But now this has become a daily routine and we don’t bother about the extra time we have to put in for work.

However there is one option in order to leave home early, it is possible only if you don’t have deadline for your work. Hence the assigned work can be completed in peace early in the morning and then the time pass continues for the day. People always say that you are very productive at mornings. Hence 1 hour study in the morning is equivalent to 2 hour study in the afternoon. But considering the IT field I would say that 1 hour coding in the morning is equivalent to 3 hours coding in the afternoon. Thus if the leads would come early In the morning and assign work early then we would work early in the morning and would go early to home.

Just assume that the above mentioned hypothetical condition of leaving early from office to home is true and I reach home by 7pm everyday. Then I would have registered for a gym someplace near my home and would have continued with my exercise everyday. Then after returning home I would have taken a good bath with hot water and watch Television without any worries. After that I would have taken my dinner with my family and discussed on some of the matters and laughed on some good jokes. Similar to these there are a many wishes in my mind which I feel should come true and I enjoy all the activities which I underwent before coming here. It is not always that this plan comes to reality but if you are lucky enough then certainly you get to enjoy these activities and have a blast.

About my educational carrier

Myself a Computer Engineer, currently working with Infosys Technologies Limited, Pune, Hinjewadi have completed my BE degree from VIT Pune.

I started taking my education from Pune i.e. I have done my entire schooling and my college life too have been completed in Pune. I wished i could get a chance to go elsewhere for my bachelors degree but as you must be knowing that Pune is quite a rated university it was not needed.

Then from my engineering college i got selected through campus and was very lucky to get into a renowned company from the field in which i am.

As of now there are no future plans for post graduation. I am going to work for Infosys till the bond period which would end at around Oct-09.
